The 1970 Plymouth Superbird was owned by Paul Messemer who worked out of Karl Gould Chrysler in Vestal NY. Tim Richards did the driving.
The motor was by Sox & Martin, came out of their 1968 Hemi Cuda. Timmy did the auto trans.
When Messemer put the Sox & Martin Hemi in the car it only had 8 miles on it.
Even though Timmy lost in round 2 of Super Stock Elminator he did win the SS/EA Class at the 1970 SummerNationals at York in this car.
In 1971 Messemer sold the car to the Al & Bob Carpinet of Wyoming PA. (As a side note, in 1973 the Carpinet Brothers bought a 68 Hemi Cuda to run SS/AA. The Cuda still sits in a garage in Wyoming PA. The photo below was taken in 1971 at Numidia. The '64 Max Wedge Plymouth in the other lane is Joe Super from Scranton.)
The Carpinet Brothers ran the car for 2 years and put a 440 motor in it.
The car was sold in 1973 to Frank Obitz of Wilkes-Barre PA. Obitz had it custom painted. The car changed hands 2 more times and currently owned by someone named Cy in PA. It still currently has the same red custom paint.
Being from Binghamton area I find this very fascinating. I vaguely remember this car.
ReplyDeleteI am from Wyoming county, PA originally, I also find this story fascinating. Does the Cuda reside in town of Wyoming or county of Wyoming, PA?
